Victoria Derby

As one of the biggest Flemington races, the Victoria Derby is a popular event and, like the Melbourne Cup, is steeped in history.

The $1.5 million three-year-old staying test first began in 1855 and is a key target for any trainer with a three-year-old that shows staying potential.

Taking place on the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup, Victoria Derby Day kicks off the Melbourne Cup Carnival and as such is always popular with punters.

Held on the Thursday immediately following the Melbourne Cup, the Crown Oaks is restricted to three-year-old fillies and is run over the same distance as the Derby, 2500m.

Many fillies heading towards the major Flemington three-year-old fillies’ race first contest the Wakeful Stakes which takes place on Derby Day.
